New Jams And Fan Requests In Portsmouth

We’re four shows into the summer tour, and it looks like the band is finally starting to shake things up and really make the sets diverse. Last night’s show in VA was no exception, with Trey acknowledging to the crowd that indeed they do take requests. Launching into the year’s first “Tube,” the foundation was set for a great night. “Tube” finally got its rightful treatment (albeit nothing like pre-hiatus or 2.0), stretching past the six-minute mark. Hey, it’s better than the three-minute nonsense of last year! A mid-set “Slave” also proved to be a great surprise, and fit in nicely early on in the set. On of the highlights came later in the set, with the band debuting their rendition of Tom Wait’s “Cold Water.” I can’t believe I missed this show…”Cold Water” is one of my favorite Tom Waits songs, and the band really nailed it. “Cold Water” transitions nicely into “Bathtub Gin,” which served as another standout jam of the first set.
Set two opened with kick-ass “Wilson > Seven Below > 46 Days” combo. The band also debuted a new Mike Gordon song, “Idea,” which will hopefully find its rightful place in rotation. A raging “2001 > Simple” also proved to be set highlights. The set closed with the ever popular 3.0 cover, “A Day In The Life,” and the evening came to a close with “Heavy Things” and “First Tube.” Anyone else pick up on the “Tube/First Tube” bookends? Just wondering…
