Mmmm Chocolate (And Phish Too)

Last night’s show at Hershey was incredible. Coming off two strong nights in Chicago and Cleveland, the band showed no signs of slowing down for their night in the chocolate kingdom.
We hit the lots around 3:30 and managed to catch soundcheck, which featured a reworked “Burn That Bridge” that Trey debuted at the Hangout Festival back in May, as well as “Sugar Shack.” It was great to just hang outside the venue and hear everything crystal clear…really a great treat. We hit the floor right when doors opened to claim our front row space. I managed to film some great HD vids (below), for those of you not in attendance.
Set one opened with “Gotta Jibboo,” which Trey eased into quietly with the band following suit after. “Jibboo” was a good choice, and the jam was calm and melodic, making it a great way to open the floodgates. The mid-set “Fluffhead” was also a treat, as I don’t think anyone saw that coming. The first real power-punch came afterwards with “Funky Bitch.” Page owned this song, hammering the clavinet for a monster solo. Set one also saw several Rift tracks played, including a dark “It’s Ice,” “Sparkle,” and “Horn.” The set closed with a mind-bending, dirty “Split Open And Melt,” with Trey wailing on the ‘doc.
Set two opened with Drowned (which was ironic because the rain held up), which was the start to a Mike-dominated set that was one of the funkiest I’ve heard in 3.0. The jam merges into “Tweezer,” where Mike really dominated. Playing slap-bass, it was apparent that he was really feeling the groove. This funkiness continued throughout the set with jams in “Twist” and “Free.” “YEM” ended the night, with the band settling into a groove that had the crowd clapping along (again with Mike’s bass really dominating). A quick “Bold As Love” encore sent us packing right at 11. I imagine there was a strict curfew. All in all, a solid night, and I can’t wait for SPAC! HD vids below.
