Trey And TAB Light Up The Palace

Trey and co. rolled into Albany last night for the second stop on their winter jaunt. Much like the previous evening, two solid sets of music were delivered that spanned Trey’s entire solo and Phish catalog. Trey seems to have really put some thought into the solo set, as he’s been playing some interesting and gorgeous renditions of songs you wouldn’t think would show up. Classic Phish tracks like “The Wedge,” “Guelah Papyrus,” and “Halley’s Comet” sounded great stripped down. The biggest bustout came with “Buffalo Bill,” a song rarely played by Phish, let alone Trey solo. Like the previous evening, Trey invited his band members up in various formations towards the end of the set, culminating in a set-closing “Devil Went Down To Georgia.”
Returning for the electric set, Trey took a great chance with “Ocelot,” introducing a horn layer that really gave the song a new layer. Hopefully it stays in rotation! Amongst classics like “Night Speaks To A Woman” and “Drifting,” Trey dusted off his take on “I Done Done It,” not heard since Charlotte 2005. The evening’s biggest surprise came with “Clint Eastwood,” a Gorillaz track featuring Jen unleashing some impressive rap skills. I like where Trey is going this tour, and these interesting covers he keeps throwing in really keep things fresh. Next stop is Boston…
